Warning
It's not a crowded place, but you might still encounter a group of people walking the trail. Don't go too fast.
Description
At around 4 km, this is one of the longest gravel roads in the Palatinate that you’re actually allowed to drive on. You can ride it with pretty much anything - doesn’t matter if you’re on a supersport bike or a tiny scooter. After bad weather it dries quickly. It’s wide enough for cars and motorcycles to pass each other without stress. The only downside: you have to go back the same way you came.
Getting there
- From the village of Rhodt unter Rietburg, head west on Theresienstraße towards the Rietania hut.
- Just before you reach the Rietania hut, there’s a small local access(*) road branching off to the right up to Rietburg. There are signsposts, so you can’t really miss it.
- The road starts with some tight bends, then turns into longer straight sections. It climbs from about 325m up to 560m in elevation, and right at the end it slopes slightly downhill again to the parking lot in front of Rietburg.
The view from Rietburg over the Rhine Valley is great. One of the few chairlifts outside the Alps also runs up here.
(*) You count as "local", when you buy something in one of the restaurants.
