Europe Netherlands
Loevestein Castle is more than a medieval castle. It was the state prison of the Netherlands. And it is also a fortress in the Dutch Water Line. With its earthen ramparts, double moats, bomb-proof shelter, and the street with soldiers' quarters, the fortress still breathes the atmosphere of an eighteenth-century soldiers' village.
in the surrounding area you have the loodplains of the Meuse and the Waal. In this beautiful Munnikenland, a great diversity of (aquatic) plants and animals has developed. Large grazers have been introduced, such as herds of Konik horses and the unique cattle breed Red Geus. Walking, cycling, or boating—you can enjoy the surroundings in various ways.
Loevestein Castle is Open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
