About this place
Schlegeis Reservoir (Schlegeisspeicher)

The Schlegeis Reservoir is one of the most impressive alpine destinations in Austria, located at the end of the spectacular Zillertal High Valley in Tyrol. Surrounded by towering three-thousand-meter peaks and glaciers, the reservoir sits at an elevation of approximately 1,800 meters and offers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the Eastern Alps.
The approach follows a scenic toll road through the Zillertal Alps, passing waterfalls, steep rock faces, and several short tunnels carved directly into the mountains. As the valley narrows, the turquoise waters of the reservoir come into view, framed by rugged peaks and the glaciers of the High Tauern range.
At the far end of the reservoir, visitors can enjoy panoramic viewpoints, hiking trails, and stunning views towards the glaciers that feed the lake.
The impressive dam itself rises over 130 meters above the valley floor and is a remarkable example of alpine engineering.
A popular stop is the mountain restaurant near the reservoir, offering traditional Tyrolean cuisine and spectacular views across the lake and surrounding mountains.

The Schlegeis Dam holds more than 120 million cubic meters of water and plays an important role in Austria's renewable hydroelectric power generation, while also serving as one of Tyrol's most photographed alpine landmarks.
