Großer Ahornboden

At the head of the Rißtal valley, where one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Alps unfolds, the Großer Ahornboden (Great Maple Floor) offers a breathtaking natural spectacle. Over 2,200 sycamore maples, some over 600 years old and a riot of color in autumn, reach for the sky here. They were declared a natural monument as early as 1927. Why this extensive stand of trees was able to develop in an area used for centuries as pastureland remains unclear. It's possible that cattle diseases or the Thirty Years' War led to the valley floor being left ungrazed for extended periods.
