Blackcraig Castle is a Baronial mansion house in Perthshire, Scotland, close to the towns of Ballintium and Blairgowrie. It was built in 1856 by Patrick Allan Fraser, a prominent Scottish artist and architect, and is designated as a Class B-listed building, with its walled garden A-listed. It has undergone extensive renovations/modernisation in recent years to return it to its full former glory and remains one of the finest examples of Baronial architecture in Scotland. Surveys suggest that, originally occupying the site of Blackcraig Castle was a 16th-century tower house thought to be the property of the Maxwells’, who were in possession of the barony of Ballmacreuchy by 1550. Patrick Allan Fraser of Hospitalfield, Arbroath purchased the estate of Blackcraig from the trustees of Robert Rattray in 1847, before embarking on the extension and renovation of the tower house in 1856, with the addition of a bridgehouse and gatehouse. The original tower house stood three storeys in height and the masonry is of lime-mortared rubble, readily distinguishable from the 19th-century extensions.  Fraser continued to alter and extend Blackcraig until the 1880’s when ill health halted further progress. It became part of the Hospitalfield Arts Trust after his death in 1890 and was later sold and run as a guest house for a number of years. The current owners have been renovating Blackcraig and its policies since 2013 with a view to returning it to its former splendour.

A small decking area overlooking the lakelets, featuring outdoor dining furniture and a heater, provides a scenic spot to experience al fresco dining in the Scottish wilderness. The paintings on the ceiling of the Lairds Room show all of the Scottish monarchs, starting with Keneth MacAlpin, 843-858 to Charles II, 1649-1651. Winner of the prestigious "Construction Project of the Year" at the Trades Awards 2020.

ETHIE CASTLE – A Castle Steeped in History and Mystery Ethie Castle is a 1,402 m² 14th-century castle located in Inverkeilor, about 5 km north of the fishing village of Arbroath in Angus, Scotland. Address: DD11 5SP. It is the second longest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland. The longest continuously inhabited castle is Castle Mey in the far northeast of Scotland, near John o’ Groats. Records of Ethie Castle date back to the early 13th century. Because the nearby, gently sloping Lunan Bay offered a perfect landing point, it is believed that the Vikings built a house on the site where Ethie was later established. In the 14th century, monks from the neighboring Arbroath Abbey built a sandstone tower house on the present site of Ethie, where they lived for several years. In the following years, the de Maxwell family owned Ethie Castle before it reverted to the monks of Arbroath and the only and last cardinal of Scotland, David Beaton, in 1524. He lived unmarried at Ethie Castle for about 20 years with Marion Orgilvy (c. 1545–1575), daughter of James Ogilvy, 1st Lord Ogilvy of Airlie, and they had eight children. Around 1530, major expansions were undertaken in the Ethie courtyard in preparation for the expected visit of King James V, whose advisor David Beaton was.Cardinal David Beaton was born in Balfour, Fife, in 1494. After studying at the University of Glasgow and St. Andrews, he became a monk at Arbroath Abbey and a member of the Scottish Parliament. In 1539, he became Archbishop of St. Andrews. On May 29, 1546, Cardinal Beaton was murdered by Protestants in St Andrews during the Reformation and subsequently hanged from a window of his castle, St Andrews Castle. The trigger for his murder was Beaton’s instigation of the burning of the preacher George Wishart on March 1, 1546. It is said that during the Reformation, the abbots hid the silver treasure from Arbroath Abbey within the walls of Ethie Castle. In 1665, Ethie was acquired by the Carnegie family (later the Earls of Northesk).  On November 1, 1647, John Carnegie (1580–1667), 1st Lord Lour and 1st Earl of Northesk, became Earl of Ethie. The 7th Earl of Northesk (1756–1831) was a vice admiral under Admiral Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805. As tribute, the Earl of Northesk was permitted to incorporate naval insignia from the Battle of Trafalgar into his arms, which can still be seen in a dormer window at Ethie Castle.

St. Olaf Rock Church, also known as St. Olaf Kirke, is a small 19th‑century limestone church located east of Cranfills Gap in Bosque County, Texas. Built in 1886 by Norwegian settlers, the structure is made entirely from local, hand‑quarried limestone, giving it a rugged, pale‑gold appearance that shifts beautifully with the sun.  The church is a simple rectangular building with a steeply pitched roof and tall, narrow windows that let in soft natural light. Its arched wooden doors and exposed stone interior create a raw, frontier feel. Inside, the sanctuary is quiet and intimate, with hand‑hewn wooden beams, unpainted stone walls, and plain wooden pews arranged in neat rows.  A small bell tower, added later, houses a bronze bell imported from Norway. The church sits on a gentle rise surrounded by oak and cedar trees, overlooking rolling ranchland. The setting is peaceful and remote — a gravel road leads to the church, and the surrounding silence adds to its historic character.  Adjacent to the building is a cemetery filled with Norwegian‑inscribed headstones, many dating back to the late 1800s. The site remains active for special services, weddings, and an annual Christmas Eve candlelight gathering.  St. Olaf Rock Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserved almost exactly as it stood in the 19th century — a rare, untouched piece of Texas frontier heritage.

Forte di Champlas SeguinThe fortress was built by the Italian military between 1896 and 1898 to protect the border against potential French attacks via the Montgenèvre Pass. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,840 meters above the hamlet of Champlas Ségui, in the municipality of Cesana Torinese in the Piedmont region. The complex had a pentagonal layout and was entirely surrounded by a moat and a stone counterscarp wall. Inside, there were single-story barracks and a central earthen rampart. It was equipped with six 15 GRC Ret cannons, positioned in pairs on the south side and aimed at the strategically important Col Bousson and Col Bourget passes. Additionally, cannons on siege carriages could be deployed to defend the Montgenèvre road, the Piccola Dora gorge, and the Cesana basin. A distinctive feature was an annular gallery running beneath the defensive wall, providing a secure connection between the artillery positions and the gunpowder magazine. On June 6, 1944, the fortress was destroyed by an explosion triggered by Italian partisans from the "Serafino" group. The aim was to prevent German troops from using the explosives stored there. The explosion destroyed large parts of the complex, particularly the northern section of the moat and the entrance areas. Nevertheless, many structures—such as the underground passages and some artillery positions—remain visible today.Die Festung wurde zwischen 1896 und 1898 vom italienischen Militär erbaut, um die Grenze gegen mögliche französische Angriffe über den Montgenèvre-Pass zu schützen. Sie liegt auf etwa 1840 m Höhe oberhalb des Weilers Champlas Ségui in der Gemeinde Cesana Torinese in der Region Piemont. Die Anlage hatte eine pentagonale Grundform, war vollständig von einem Graben und einer steinernen Contrescarpe-Mauer umgeben. Innerhalb befanden sich einstöckige Kasernen und ein zentraler Erdwall. Sie war mit sechs 15 GRC Ret-Kanonen ausgestattet, die paarweise auf der Südseite positioniert waren und auf die strategisch wichtigen Pässe Col Bousson und Col Bourget zielten. Zusätzlich konnten Kanonen auf Belagerungslafetten installiert werden, um die Straße von Monginevro, die Schlucht der Piccola Dora und das Becken von Cesana zu verteidigen. Ein besonderes Merkmal war ein Ringstollen, der unter der Schutzmauer verlief und eine sichere Verbindung zwischen den Artilleriestellungen und dem Pulvermagazin ermöglichte. Am 6. Juni 1944 wurde die Festung durch eine Explosion zerstört, die von italienischen Partisanen der Gruppe Serafino ausgelöst wurde. Ziel war es, zu verhindern, dass die deutschen Truppen das dort gelagerte Sprengmaterial nutzen konnten. Die Explosion zerstörte große Teile der Anlage, insbesondere den nördlichen Teil des Grabens und die Eingangsbereiche. Dennoch sind viele Strukturen, wie die unterirdischen Gänge und einige Artillerieposten, bis heute erkennbar.

As the fortifications of Fenestrelle extended up the hillside above the road, both the road itself and the adjacent stream had to be blocked off. The mountain fortress provided security from the north, while Forte Mutin did so from the south; the only potential weak points were the road passage and the stream. Consequently, a blockhouse was constructed right by the stream to serve as a road barrier. This structure, along with the infantry defenses, was partially destroyed during road expansion work.Während sich die Festungsanlagen von Fenestrelle oberhalb der Straße den Hang hinauf ziehen mussten sowohl die Traße, als auch der daneben fließende Bach gesperrt werden. Von der Nordseite sicherte die Bergfestung, von Süden her die Forte Mutin. Nur der Straßendurchlass selbst und der Bach wäre eine Schachstelle gewesen. Daher errichtet man direkt am Bach und als Straßesperre eine Blockhaus. Dieses, wie auch die Infanterieverteidigung wurden aufgrund des Straßenausbaus teilweise zerstört.

Kaserne am Colle delle FinestreThe barracks at Colle delle Finestre are located directly above the mountain pass road and are marked with signs designating the area as a restricted military zone. The structure is clearly visible from the path leading to the Corpo di Guardia del Falouel.Die Kaserne am Colle delle Finestre liegt direkt oberhalb der Passtraße und ist mit Schildern als militärische Sperrgebiet gekennzeichnet. Das Bauwerk ist vom Weg der zum Corpo di Guardia del Falouel führt gut zu erkennen. 

Caserma Colle FaunieraVia the southern ramp of the Colle Fauniera - and continuing over the Colle Valcavera - one could reach the field artillery positions as well as various bunkers of the Vallo Alpino. Situated at the access point to these locations are this barracks (now in ruins) and two other buildings.Über die Südrampe des Colle Fauniera erreichte man die über den weiter führenden Colle Valcavera die Stellungen der Feldartillerie wie auch diverse Bunker des Vallo Alpino. An der Zufahrt zu diesen befindet sich diese, heute verfallene, Kaserne, sowie zwei weitere Gebäude.

Forte Serre MarieSerre Marie was built in 1892 as an advanced outpost for the Fenestrelle Fortress, designed to block approaches to the main stronghold via the Colle delle Finestre. The fort accommodated a garrison of 200 men, with artillery emplacements situated on its flat roof. Constructed primarily of stone, the fort soon lost its strategic relevance due to the advent of high-explosive shells; by the early 20th century, it was completely obsolete and served only as a depot and troop barracks. It was abandoned after World War II.Forte Serre Marie wurde 1892 als vorgeschobener Posten für die Festung Fenestrelle erbaut. Sie sollte die Annäherung an die Festung Fenestrelle über den Colle delle Finestre verhindern. Die Festung war für 200 Mann ausgelegt mit der Geschützaufstellung auf dem flachen Dach. Noch weitgehend in Steinbausweise ausgeführt, verlore sie bald durch die Brisanzgranaten an Bedeutung. Sie war daher im frühen 20. Jahhundert vollkommen veraltet und wurde daher nur noch als Depot und Truppenunterlunft genutzt. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg wurde sei aufgegeben.
