Lucknerhaus / Kalser Glocknerstrasse
Lucknerhaus with view on GrossglocknerThe Lucknerhaus is one of the most iconic alpine destinations in Austria, located at the end of the scenic Kalser Glocknerstraße in East Tyrol. Nestled at an elevation of approximately 1,920 meters, it offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views of Austria’s highest mountain, the majestic Grossglockner (3,798 m).The route to the Lucknerhaus winds through the peaceful Ködnitz Valley, passing traditional alpine meadows, mountain streams, and dramatic rock formations before opening up to breathtaking views of the Glockner massif.Unlike the busier Grossglockner High Alpine Road, this valley offers a quieter and more authentic alpine atmosphere while still providing direct views of the country's most famous peak. The Lucknerhaus itself serves as a mountain hotel, restaurant, and popular starting point for hikers and mountaineers heading towards the Grossglockner. Its large panoramic terrace is considered one of the finest viewpoints in the Eastern Alps, offering unobstructed views of glaciers, rugged summits, and the imposing pyramid of the Grossglockner.
A stop at the restaurant is highly recommended, whether for a traditional Tyrolean meal, coffee with a view, or simply to enjoy the unique alpine scenery in a relaxed setting. The Lucknerhaus is one of the closest locations accessible by public road to the Grossglockner and has served as a traditional base for climbers attempting Austria’s highest summit for generations.

Schlegeisspeicher
Schlegeis Reservoir (Schlegeisspeicher)The Schlegeis Reservoir is one of the most impressive alpine destinations in Austria, located at the end of the spectacular Zillertal High Valley in Tyrol. Surrounded by towering three-thousand-meter peaks and glaciers, the reservoir sits at an elevation of approximately 1,800 meters and offers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the Eastern Alps. The approach follows a scenic toll road through the Zillertal Alps, passing waterfalls, steep rock faces, and several short tunnels carved directly into the mountains. As the valley narrows, the turquoise waters of the reservoir come into view, framed by rugged peaks and the glaciers of the High Tauern range. At the far end of the reservoir, visitors can enjoy panoramic viewpoints, hiking trails, and stunning views towards the glaciers that feed the lake. The impressive dam itself rises over 130 meters above the valley floor and is a remarkable example of alpine engineering.A popular stop is the mountain restaurant near the reservoir, offering traditional Tyrolean cuisine and spectacular views across the lake and surrounding mountains. The Schlegeis Dam holds more than 120 million cubic meters of water and plays an important role in Austria's renewable hydroelectric power generation, while also serving as one of Tyrol's most photographed alpine landmarks.

Wälder Metzge (Warth)
Warth is a picturesque alpine village located in the Lechtal region of Austria's Vorarlberg province. Best known as a popular winter sports destination, it also serves as an important gateway between some of the nice mountain roads in the Austrian Alps.
To the south, the route continues via the famous Flexen Pass towards the heart of Vorarlberg and the Arlberg region. To the west, the Hochtannberg Pass offers a spectacular crossing through impressive alpine landscapes and sweeping mountain scenery.A particularly worthwhile stop in Warth is the Wälder Metzge, a traditional butcher shop and restaurant renowned for its regional ham and bacon specialties. Here, visitors can enjoy locally produced delicacies, including air-dried and gently smoked cured meats prepared according to long-standing regional traditions.Open 365 days a year from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, it is a popular stop for travelers throughout the seasons. My personal must-try recommendation is the legendary ham roll ("Schinkensemmel"), a simple yet iconic local specialty that has become a tradition on every visit.
Even if you're only passing through, make time for a short stop at Wälder Metzge. The combination of authentic regional products, mountain atmosphere, and warm hospitality makes it one of the most memorable stops in the area.
Despite its small size, Warth is one of Austria's snowiest villages and forms part of one of the country's largest interconnected ski areas.
