The Strait of Magellan is a navigable route of approximately 600 km located in the extreme south of South America, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans between the Chilean continent and Tierra del Fuego. Discovered in 1520 by Fernão de Magalhães, it was historically crucial for navigation, being today an important place of ecotourism and marine fauna. Main characteristics and curiosities: History: Discovered on November 27, 1520, the strait was fundamental before the Panama Canal to avoid Cape Horn. Location: It belongs territorially to Chile, separating continental Patagonia from Ilha Grande from Tierra do Fogo. Navigation: Known for being a difficult passage, with strong winds, unpredictable currents and hostile climate. Fauna and Tourism: Famous for the observation of Magellan penguins (at the Los Pinguinos Natural Monument), humpback whales, orcas and sea lions. Navegação: Conhecido por ser uma passagem difícil, com ventos fortes, correntes imprevisíveis e clima hostil. Cabo Vírgenes is a promontory in the extreme southeast of Argentina (Province of Santa Cruz), famous for being the ground zero of Ruta Nacional 40, the eastern entrance to the Strait of Magellan and home to one of the largest penguins in Patagonia. Discovered by Fernão de Magalhães in 1520, the place has a historic lighthouse in operation since 1904.O Cabo Vírgenes é um promontório no extremo sudeste da Argentina (Província de Santa Cruz), famoso por ser o marco zero da Ruta Nacional 40, a entrada oriental do Estreito de Magalhães e abrigar uma das maiores pinguineiras da Patagônia. Descoberto por Fernão de Magalhães em 1520, o local possui um farol histórico em operação desde 1904. 

The Marjory Glen is a historic, three-masted iron barque built in Scotland in 1892 that famously caught fire and was beached near Punta Loyola, Argentina, in 1911. It remains a prominent, rusting shipwreck near Rio Gallegos, often visited by tourists and famously used as target practice by Argentine pilots during the 1982 Falklands War. 

One of the first residential buildings in the city, when the rule was still to live in mansions. Project by architect João Artacho Jurado, the building was launched in 1958, it was much criticised at the time for making a building with so many social places. The building was listed by the Historical Heritage of the City of São Paulo.

The Natural Monument Bosques Petrificados, located in the province of Santa Cruz, was created in 1954 by the Argentine State in order to preserve Patagonian forests that go through a petrification process.

Punta Tombo, in the province of Chubut, Argentina, is home to the largest continental colony of Magellan penguins in the world. Located about 110 km south of Trelew, the reserve attracts thousands of penguins between September and March for reproduction. Visitors can walk along trails a few metres from the penguins in their natural habitat.
