Working Island Neeltje Jans

Europe Netherlands View Point
About this place
This is the working island Neeltje Jans. After the storm surge of 1953, The Netherlands decided to build a massive system of barriers to protect this fragile part of the country. They developed specialist ships and other equipment to realize the massive storm surge barrier. The pillars have been build within this "harbour". They made one extra, which wasn't needed in the end and is still standing as a silent witness. The others have been placed to realize the impressive storm surge barrier. An enginering marvel!
