St. Olaf Rock Church, also known as St. Olaf Kirke, is a small 19th‑century limestone church located east of Cranfills Gap in Bosque County, Texas. Built in 1886 by Norwegian settlers, the structure is made entirely from local, hand‑quarried limestone, giving it a rugged, pale‑gold appearance that shifts beautifully with the sun.  The church is a simple rectangular building with a steeply pitched roof and tall, narrow windows that let in soft natural light. Its arched wooden doors and exposed stone interior create a raw, frontier feel. Inside, the sanctuary is quiet and intimate, with hand‑hewn wooden beams, unpainted stone walls, and plain wooden pews arranged in neat rows.  A small bell tower, added later, houses a bronze bell imported from Norway. The church sits on a gentle rise surrounded by oak and cedar trees, overlooking rolling ranchland. The setting is peaceful and remote — a gravel road leads to the church, and the surrounding silence adds to its historic character.  Adjacent to the building is a cemetery filled with Norwegian‑inscribed headstones, many dating back to the late 1800s. The site remains active for special services, weddings, and an annual Christmas Eve candlelight gathering.  St. Olaf Rock Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserved almost exactly as it stood in the 19th century — a rare, untouched piece of Texas frontier heritage.

This park has some very interesting rock formations and there is also a channel that was cut through the rock for a rail road which was never completed. La Ciudad offers a lot of options for cabins and camping as well as ATV and SXS rentals. It does get quite cold here in the winter, there can be light snow.

Fields Station is located in the tiny community of Fields, Oregon, in southeastern Harney County, roughly 50 miles southeast of Frenchglen, between the Steens Mountains and Pueblo Mountains. Fields itself has only around a hundred residents in its broader area and is extremely remote.  The station dates back to 1881, when Charles M. Fields homesteaded there and established a stage station along the old route between Burns and Winnemucca, Nevada. The location became a stopping and resupply point for stage travelers, freight haulers and ranchers.  Today, Fields Station is essentially the community's general store, gas station, café and lodging operation all rolled into one.

Brazos Point Bridge is a historic 1914 pin‑connected Pratt through‑truss bridge spanning the Brazos River between Johnson and Bosque Counties. Built by the Austin Bridge Company, it features three steel truss spans and a long series of timber approach spans, all resting above quiet farmland and riverbank woods. The bridge is narrow, single‑lane, and long abandoned since being bypassed in 2000, giving it a weathered, time‑capsule feel. The steelwork shows classic early‑20th‑century craftsmanship: lattice portal bracing, turnbuckles on the diagonal members, Jones & Laughlin‑marked steel, and visible pinned connections throughout the truss. A legendary biker‑friendly roadhouse in Cranfills Gap known for its rustic Texas atmosphere, big portions, and fast, friendly service. Riders come here for the hefty burgers — especially the jalapeño “Toad bun” — crispy onion rings, wings, nachos, and cold bottled beer. It’s a classic Central Texas destination ride with a laid‑back patio, great value, and a welcoming vibe for anyone rolling in on two wheels.

This is a great place to camp by the side of the river, we were here during the week and there was no one else camping, it's probably busier on the weekends. The last 2-3 km dropping down into the valley are difficult due to the tight switchbacks, loose rocks and rain rutted road.  There is a store/restaurant down there but we didn't see anyone around, perhaps it's only open on weekends. We found enough small sticks to be able to have a campfire, the ground is mostly sand where we camped. It was around 30 degrees (Celsius) but drops down to around 17 overnight (August). The water was not very deep and was warm.

The 693-acre (2.80 square miles) water body features scenic surroundings and shallow waters. Constructed in 1889 as part of Benjamin Leavitt's irrigation enterprise, it is currently owned and operated by Lassen Irrigation District. The lake is located in Lassen National Forest off Highway 44, about 10 miles northeast of Westwood.Constructed in 1889 as part of Benjamin Leavitt’s expanding reclamation enterprise and now part of the Lassen Irrigation District. Lassen National Forest Service Supervisor, A. G. Brenneis, wrote an article about the origin of its name that was published in the California Ranger, August 1938: “Many years ago the residents of Honey Lake Valley joined together to start the Susan River Irrigation District and, as a first step, began the construction of the dams at the present sites of Hog Flat and McCoy Flat Reservoirs. The first winter this country received heavy storms and as a result the dam at Hog Flat was destroyed. The entire meadow, which should have been a lake was covered with a rank growth of vegetation and in order to salvage something from the reservoir, the farmers of the district banded together, placed a huge herd of hogs on the meadow, fattened them, and made some money to repay them for the loss of the dam. Just Plain Gas and Grocery is a great fuel stop and small grocery store.They have everything you need to keep your adventure rolling.The gas pumps only work when the store is open so call ahead to check the hours if you are coming by late. They have great ice cream cones.

Crane Store and Cafe is a great place for a pit stop. Good thing, because there are not many places to get gas around here! This is one of those oasis locations that we need to support to make sure they stay alive and thriving.They have gas (and Diesel) from the pump right out front. They also have a small store and a cafe where you can have a meal. They even have a few RV spots if you need a place to camp.

The route takes you from San Joaquin to Zimapan through the the river bed, it's a challenging ride but well worth it. There is an active mine at the bottom of the river and there are dump trucks traveling up and down the road to Zimapan. 

Paricutin is a dormant volcano located in Michoacan that swallowed up a couple of towns, the only evidence of these towns is the top of the church. The off-road ride to the parking lot has some deep black sand in some sections that can make it difficult, one of the guys we were with dropped his bike getting there. The church is located close to the parking lot but it does require you to climb over the lava field to get to it but it's well worth the hike.

The dunas rojas are a unique location and a great destination, there is a 60 pesos entrance fee and the road to San Francisco offers a fun ride and is very scenic. The last 2km are off-road but it's an easy off-road, I could do this 2 up and I'm just an average rider.

Well maintained Canadian wilderness campground. Robust bear fence installed. Great views of the lake. One of the better campgrounds for keeping away from the standard crowd.

This is a beautiful place to stop and look over the fertile valley of Metztitlan. The offroad between here and Tolantongo passes through an incredible canyon with very nice views and deadly drop offs. The track is used in both directions so be careful around the corners.

Tolantongo is an incredible location to visit with it's thermal teal volcanic river. This place gets VERY busy on long weekends and holidays. It's best to visit during the week and when school is in session. There is a hotel here or you can camp by the river side, there are also restaurants here but don't expect gourmet food. There is a store at the hotel that sells a variety of alcohol including beer, wine and tequila.
