Forte di Champlas SeguinThe fortress was built by the Italian military between 1896 and 1898 to protect the border against potential French attacks via the Montgenèvre Pass. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,840 meters above the hamlet of Champlas Ségui, in the municipality of Cesana Torinese in the Piedmont region. The complex had a pentagonal layout and was entirely surrounded by a moat and a stone counterscarp wall. Inside, there were single-story barracks and a central earthen rampart. It was equipped with six 15 GRC Ret cannons, positioned in pairs on the south side and aimed at the strategically important Col Bousson and Col Bourget passes. Additionally, cannons on siege carriages could be deployed to defend the Montgenèvre road, the Piccola Dora gorge, and the Cesana basin. A distinctive feature was an annular gallery running beneath the defensive wall, providing a secure connection between the artillery positions and the gunpowder magazine. On June 6, 1944, the fortress was destroyed by an explosion triggered by Italian partisans from the "Serafino" group. The aim was to prevent German troops from using the explosives stored there. The explosion destroyed large parts of the complex, particularly the northern section of the moat and the entrance areas. Nevertheless, many structures—such as the underground passages and some artillery positions—remain visible today.Die Festung wurde zwischen 1896 und 1898 vom italienischen Militär erbaut, um die Grenze gegen mögliche französische Angriffe über den Montgenèvre-Pass zu schützen. Ein besonderes Merkmal war ein Ringstollen, der unter der Schutzmauer verlief und eine sichere Verbindung zwischen den Artilleriestellungen und dem Pulvermagazin ermöglichte. Am 6. Juni 1944 wurde die Festung durch eine Explosion zerstört, die von italienischen Partisanen der Gruppe Serafino ausgelöst wurde. Ziel war es, zu verhindern, dass die deutschen Truppen das dort gelagerte Sprengmaterial nutzen konnten. Die Explosion zerstörte große Teile der Anlage, insbesondere den nördlichen Teil des Grabens und die Eingangsbereiche. Dennoch sind viele Strukturen, wie die unterirdischen Gänge und einige Artillerieposten, bis heute erkennbar.

As the fortifications of Fenestrelle extended up the hillside above the road, both the road itself and the adjacent stream had to be blocked off. The mountain fortress provided security from the north, while Forte Mutin did so from the south; the only potential weak points were the road passage and the stream. Consequently, a blockhouse was constructed right by the stream to serve as a road barrier. This structure, along with the infantry defenses, was partially destroyed during road expansion work.Während sich die Festungsanlagen von Fenestrelle oberhalb der Straße den Hang hinauf ziehen mussten sowohl die Traße, als auch der daneben fließende Bach gesperrt werden. Von der Nordseite sicherte die Bergfestung, von Süden her die Forte Mutin. Nur der Straßendurchlass selbst und der Bach wäre eine Schachstelle gewesen. Daher errichtet man direkt am Bach und als Straßesperre eine Blockhaus. Dieses, wie auch die Infanterieverteidigung wurden aufgrund des Straßenausbaus teilweise zerstört.

The structure is clearly visible from the path leading to the Corpo di Guardia del Falouel.Die Kaserne am Colle delle Finestre liegt direkt oberhalb der Passtraße und ist mit Schildern als militärische Sperrgebiet gekennzeichnet. Das Bauwerk ist vom Weg der zum Corpo di Guardia del Falouel führt gut zu erkennen. 

Caserma Colle FaunieraVia the southern ramp of the Colle Fauniera - and continuing over the Colle Valcavera - one could reach the field artillery positions as well as various bunkers of the Vallo Alpino. Situated at the access point to these locations are this barracks (now in ruins) and two other buildings.Über die Südrampe des Colle Fauniera erreichte man die über den weiter führenden Colle Valcavera die Stellungen der Feldartillerie wie auch diverse Bunker des Vallo Alpino. An der Zufahrt zu diesen befindet sich diese, heute verfallene, Kaserne, sowie zwei weitere Gebäude.

Forte Serre MarieSerre Marie was built in 1892 as an advanced outpost for the Fenestrelle Fortress, designed to block approaches to the main stronghold via the Colle delle Finestre. The fort accommodated a garrison of 200 men, with artillery emplacements situated on its flat roof. Constructed primarily of stone, the fort soon lost its strategic relevance due to the advent of high-explosive shells; by the early 20th century, it was completely obsolete and served only as a depot and troop barracks. It was abandoned after World War II.Forte Serre Marie wurde 1892 als vorgeschobener Posten für die Festung Fenestrelle erbaut. Jahhundert vollkommen veraltet und wurde daher nur noch als Depot und Truppenunterlunft genutzt. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg wurde sei aufgegeben.

The structure is accessible only via a track that has since fallen into disrepair and lies approximately 500 meters east of—and above—the pass road, which is largely unpaved.Auf halber Strecke zur Passhöhe und hoch über dem Tal bei Fenestrelle liegt dieser Wachturm am Colle delle Finestre. Das Bauwerk ist nur über eine heute verfallenen Fahrweg erreichbar und liegt rund 500 m östlich und oberhalb der in weiten Teilen unbefestigten Passtraße.

Lost Place Camp KonradThe structure—built only to the shell stage and never completed—was intended for the private use of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer; the building application was submitted to the Prüm District Office on July 11, 1955, as "Project LS/36/55," designated as the "new construction of a hunting, weekend, and guest house near Duppach." The building is situated between the municipalities of Duppach and Steffeln; construction of the elaborate villa—featuring a total living area of ​​600 square meters—began there in 1955 on a 2,000-square-meter plot of land in the Kammerwald forest.Some corruption rumors stopped the project.

The old A4 motorway route near Kerpen and Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia is a famous "ghost motorway" and an abandoned site. In 2014, the roadway was relocated southward—at a cost of around 85 million euros—to make way for the Hambach open-cast lignite mine. THE HISTORY OF THE BASIL SANATORIUM In the village of Borgoumont in the Belgian Ardennes, an imposing building known as the Sanatorium du Basil stands atop a hill. This site boasts a rich history and was originally built as a tuberculosis sanatorium. In the late 19th century, tuberculosis was considered a fatal disease without proper treatment; consequently, sanatoriums sprang up across Europe in locations offering clean air and tranquility. The initiative to build this particular sanatorium came from Ernest Malvoz, head of the bacteriological laboratory. The building opened in 1903 and admitted its first patients. With the advent of better medications, the sanatorium lost its original purpose. At various times, it served as a hospital and later as a reception center for refugees. Ultimately, high energy costs forced the building to close permanently. Since then, it has been left to decay; it has suffered damage and fallen into disrepair, though it is now part of an urban development project. Although the sanatorium has stood empty for years, it has not yet been demolished; there are even discussions regarding a potential sale. Whether it will ever reopen remains to be seen. Until then, it remains an impressive and mysterious place for anyone who dares to take a look.DIE GESCHICHTE DES SANATORIUMS BASIL Im Dorf Borgoumont in den belgischen Ardennen steht auf einem Hügel ein imposantes Gebäude, bekannt als Sanatorium du Basil. Dieser Ort blickt auf eine reiche Geschichte zurück und wurde ursprünglich als Tuberkulose-Sanatorium erbaut. Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts galt Tuberkulose ohne angemessene Behandlung als tödliche Krankheit. Sanatorien entstanden in ganz Europa an Orten mit sauberer Luft und Ruhe. Die Initiative zum Bau dieses Sanatoriums ging von Ernest Malvoz, Leiter des bakteriologischen Labors. Das Gebäude wurde 1903 eröffnet und die ersten Patienten aufgenommen. Mit dem Aufkommen besserer Medikamente verlor das Sanatorium seine ursprüngliche Funktion. Zeitweise diente es als Krankenhaus und später als Aufnahmezentrum für Flüchtlinge. Letztendlich zwangen hohe Energiekosten das Gebäude zur endgültigen Schließung. Seitdem ist es dem Verfall preisgegeben. Es wurde beschädigt, verfiel und dient nun als Teil eines Stadtentwicklungsprojekts. Obwohl das Sanatorium seit Jahren leer steht, wurde es noch nicht abgerissen. Es gibt sogar Gespräche über einen Verkauf. Ob es jemals wiedereröffnet wird, bleibt abzuwarten. Bis dahin ist es ein beeindruckender und geheimnisvoller Ort für alle, die es wagen, einen Blick darauf zu werfen.

Schloss Erbholf, ThedinghausenDer Erbhof Thedinghausen ist ein Herrensitz in der Gemeinde Thedinghausen im niedersächsischen Landkreis Verden. Das heute erhaltene Hauptgebäude wurde ab 1619 vom evangelisch-lutherischen Erzbischof Johann Friedrich von Bremen für seine Geliebte im Stil der Weserrenaissance erbaut.

Altes Zollhaus HerrnburgDas Alte Zollhaus in Herrnburg ist das älteste heute noch stehende Wohnhaus in dem mecklenburgischen Grenzort zur Hansestadt Lübeck. Es entstand als Kapelle an der Landstraße nach Schwerin. Das heutige Gebäude wurde 1783 auf den Fundamenten der Vorgängerkapelle als zweigeschossiger Fachwerkbau neben der Dorfkirche Herrnburg zunächst wiederum als Kapelle errichtet. Nach der Sanierung des Gebäudes Mitte der 1990er Jahre wurde es bis 2012 als Galerie genutzt. Seit 2013 wird das Alte Zollhaus von einem Geigenbauer mit seiner Familie bewohnt.The Old Customs House in Herrnburg is the oldest surviving residential building in this Mecklenburg border village near the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. The current building—a two-story half-timbered structure—was erected in 1783 on the foundations of the previous chapel, located next to the Herrnburg village church; initially, it served as a chapel once again. Following its renovation in the mid-1990s, the building was used as a gallery until 2012. Since 2013, the Old Customs House has been occupied by a violin maker and his family.

August 1974 der'21jährige Hans-Georg Lemme aus Groß Breese beim Versuch, die Elbe zu durchschwimmen, um in die Bundesrepublik zu fliehen, getötet. Nachdem ein Patrouillenboot der DDR-Grenztruppen auf den Flüchtling aufmerksam geworden war und in nicht zur Umkehr bewegen konnte, fuhren die DDR-Grenzer mit ihrem Boot über den Flüchtling. Dabei wurde Lemme durch die Schiffsschraube tödlich verletzt. Sein Leichnam wurde erst nach einigen Tagen in der Elbe treibend entdeckt. Die sterblichen Überreste des jungen Mannes ruhen auf dem Dorffriedhof in Groß Breese. Die an der Tat beteiligten DDR-Grenzer gingen nach dem Mauerfall straffrei aus. Das Landgericht in Schwerin vermochte die Tötungsabsicht des Kapitäns nicht nachzuweisen. Close to this place the 21-year-old Hans-Georg Lemme from Gross Breese was killed by GDR border troops on August 19, 1974 right here in the river. He had tried to flee to West Germany by swimming across the Elbe in the late evening. Lemme was fatally injured by the propeller of their their boat. His body was discovered floating in the river Elbe a few days later. The remains of the young man were put to rest in the village cemetery of Gross Breese. The East German border. guards responsible for his death were tried by the district court in Schwerin atfer the Wall had collapsed. They were acquitted as their intention to kill could not be proven.

Le Roc CournutThe Roc Cornut is a geological curiosity in the Pyrénées-Orientales department. It consists of a cluster of limestone rocks arranged by nature in a unique way, balanced atop one another. There are two layers of stone: the first is made up of several rounded rocks eroded by the wind. One of these is larger than the others and supports the second layer, which consists of a large, mushroom-shaped rock. The entire formation stands approximately 4 to 5 meters tall.

Die Burgruine Ehrenberg bewachte einst, gemeinsam mit der Festung auf dem Schlosskopf, der Klause Talsperre und dem Fort Claudia das gesamte Tal, eine sehr eindrucksvolle Festungsanlage, die man hervorragend besichtigen kann. Man sollte aber etwas Zeit einplanen, es lohnt sich.**********Together with the fortress on the Schlosskopf, the Klause barrier, and Fort Claudia, the Ehrenberg castle ruins once guarded the entire valley—an impressive fortification complex that is well worth visiting. Nesseby Church is one of the most impressive churches in East Finnmark – not only because of its history, but also because of its location directly on the Varangerfjord. The white wooden church stands almost like a lighthouse in the vast, treeless landscape.The current church was built in 1858, replacing older predecessor buildings. It is therefore one of the older surviving churches in Finnmark.The church is unusually oriented: it is not strictly east-west, but north-south, so that the entrance faces the village and "welcomes" visitors. It can accommodate 250 people, which is remarkable considering the total population of 4,500 in the entire region.The historic altarpiece is particularly worth seeing. It originally came from the old church in Kiberg and was brought to Nesseby in 1747.
